Computer Skills Tests for Job Applicants

Administration time 15-20 minutes (estimated)

Difficulty Level: Basic and Intermediate versions available

Question Type: Primarily interactive simulation of common computer tasks, with a few multiple choice.

Most commonly used tests:  Basic Computer Literacy or General Computer Literacy

Target jobs:  Customer service reps, warehouse/industrial, technicians, healthcare (clinical) and freelancers or contract workers. Any position that doesn't require Microsoft Office skills.

It's a mistake to assume that all applicants will have the computer skills that your positions require.  Even with a generation of digital "natives", not everyone will have the same tech ability.  Most job positions don't require an extremely high level of tech knowledge, but the ability to do beginner level tasks (email attachments, enter a password correctly) should found in the applicants you're considering.

But studies have shown that almost a third of the American workforce have limited or little technical skills.  What does this mean for your organization, if your new hires aren't technologically proficient?

  • Increased training costs (or new hires not making it through training).
  • Loss of productivity.
  • More work for your IT staff ("How do I restart the computer?")
  • Increased turnover rates, which starts the hiring cycle all over again.

Not to mention the common errors these employees can make.  Can't send an email.  Can't switch to different windows or tabs.  And let's not forget the critical security issues--passwords, viruses or malware.  All of these can have a tremendous impact on your organization's bottom line.

How we help

Our interactive computer skills tests are designed to test job applicants on the most common computer tasks.  The tests cover everything from entering a password to using basic features of a web page.  Use the form above to get a free test sample to see how it works.

Avoiding bias

Using pre-employment tests, such as our computer skills tests, is one way to avoid bias in the hiring process. Bias can be conscious or unconscious and recruiters may not be aware that they have them. But using research-based, validated pre-hire tests reduces bias that may come from work or educational experience. All of our tests follow the guidelines of the EEOC and US Department of Labor's Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection.

Computer Skills Tests (view topics):

  • General Computer Literacy (Open folder, Move Files, Forward Email and more)
  • Basic Computer Literacy Test (Using a Mouse, Menus & more)
  • Windows 10 Operating System Test

How are these tests scored?

Our system instantly generates the score and the test administrator is emailed the report as soon as each test is completed (no "scoring by hand" or waiting on us).  The test taker does not receive or view the results.  These reports are highly detailed and cover the below topics (see sample report):

  • Percent of Correct Answers (80%, 50%, 100%, etc)
  • Skill Level: Beginning, Intermediate, or Advanced
  • Correct/Incorrect for each question
  • Time taken per question and more

If you need Microsoft Office tests, we have individual tests for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook..  You can use those tests to dive deeper into each applicant's skills.

If you need to administer other tests, such as reasoning skills, behavioral skills, clerical skills or industry knowledge, we have those too.  Here's the entire test list.

How does it work?

It's simple. You'll email a test session link to the applicants from our easy-to-use admin dashboard. The test session can include either a single test or multiple tests, based on your needs.   Tests are taken either in your office or from your applicants' home/office, at any time--day, night or weekends. Our team is available if you (or the applicant) needs any help at all.

How does it work for the applicant?

The applicant will receive an emailed test invitation. They will click on a link in that email to start the test on their computer.  The test will begin in their web browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari).  They do not need to download or install anything.  After the test is completed, the screen closes and our system emails the score report to the test administrator. The applicant does not see the score.

Can I customize the tests?

With our TestBuilder tool, we can customize tests from our question bank. A 25 credit purchase ($450) provides one custom test, built to your specs. You can purchase TestBuilder separately to create your own custom tests from the question bank.

How much does it cost?

We have two pricing plans, "per test" and an annual license. If you're testing fewer than 100 people per year, the "per test" pricing is often better for you. "Per test" pricing start around $20 per test for low volumes with FREE account set up. Testing more than 100 applicants? An annual plan may be better.

Either way, you have access to not only the computers skills tests, but also our entire list of 100+ tests. Let's talk to see which works best. Call 1.800.836.1901, Ext. 1, or complete the form above and we’ll send a free sample test.
