This week President Obama announced his pick to replace the retiring Supreme Court Justice David Souter. Federal Judge Appeals Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor of New York will be President Obama's nomination for one of the most exalted judiciary positions in the world. Beside the benefit of hearing cases that could ultimately steer the course of our nation, Supreme Court Justices also enjoy tenure for life, an annual salary of $208,100 (with a "no pay cut" clause guaranteed by the Constitution), an office with a fireplace, and artwork on loan from the Smithsonian, according to NPR.
Sounds just like your job, right?
But before Judge Sotomayor can join the Supreme Court, she must first endure questioning by the Senate Judiciary Committe before facing a vote by the full Senate. Her past opinions will be reviewed (read: work experiences) and her past extensively searched (read: background screening) for inconsistencies on a personal and professional basis. Kind of like pre-employment screening, right?
Are you going through the same process for your job applicants?
If the future success of our country depends on the quality of these justices, doesn't the success of your company (or division or business unit) depend on the quality of the employees that you hire?
You can't send your applicants to the Judiciary Committee for questioning. But you can use hiring tools that will help predict their future job performance. Luckily, we happen to have such a list of tools right here.
